Some days are just grumpier than others.
Tardar Sauce, the cat more famously known as Grumpy Cat, became an Internet sensation for her dour expression seven years ago when a photo posted on Reddit by her owners’ brother went viral. Her permanent grumpy expression was caused by a combination of an underbite and feline dwarfism, not, as her memes suggest, by a hatred of the world. In fact, she was, according to her owners, a normally sweet cat.

Her Internet fame led to millions of people the world over following her across varying social media platforms. She made appearances on television, including the Today Show, Good Morning America, American Idol, CBS Evening News, the Bachelorette, and more. She was interviewed for Forbes magazine, made a Cheerios television commercial, and became a spokescat for Friskies. There are Grumpy Cat books, a comic strip, and even a film.
In Grumpy Cat’s short seven years of life, she accomplished more than many humans do. Her human owners announced on May 17, 2019, that she had passed away due to complications from a urinary tract infection. Despite the best medical care available, she died peacefully in her sleep in the arms of her human mother.

Her grumpy expression brought joy and smiles to millions around the world and the world won’t be hated quite the same way without her. But we can take comfort in the fact that she’s now in a grumpier place.
Grumpy Cat died once. It was awful.
